LFA EPSC 1 - Small Polystyrene Compactor
The LFA EPSC 1 is a compact polystyrene compactor (EPS compactor) designed to reduce expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging waste into dense, manageable blocks. It achieves a compaction ratio of up to 50:1, forming solid EPS blocks with a cross-section of 130 x 130 mm, dramatically reducing the space taken up by loose polystyrene stored in bags, bins and skips. This makes it a practical on-site polystyrene compaction solution for UK businesses.
Block length is variable and typically cut manually at around 800 mm, allowing blocks to stack neatly on a standard pallet ready for storage or collection.
The machine has a 600 x 360 mm feed opening and can process up to 20 kg of EPS per hour, equivalent to approximately 2 m³ of loose polystyrene per hour, depending on material size, density and feeding efficiency. Back pressure within the compaction channel is set manually using a simple turnbuckle channel clamp system, creating resistance at the end of the channel to allow the screw auger to compact the material effectively. This can be adjusted to suit different grades of polystyrene without the need for electronic pressure controls.
The LFA EPSC 1 stops when no material is being processed, so the machine is not left running with an empty chamber during operation, which can otherwise cause overheating and material melting. The unit is supplied on castors, allowing it to be moved around site where required rather than fixed in one position, making it suitable for areas where EPS waste is generated at multiple points.
The LFA EPSC 1 is commonly used across the UK in retail, warehousing, manufacturing and distribution sites, as well as fishmongers, food retailers, electrical and small domestic appliance stores, where expanded polystyrene packaging needs to be compacted on site to reduce storage space and waste collections.
Compacting EPS into dense blocks turns polystyrene from a disposal cost into a recyclable material with value. At present, compacted EPS typically achieves £500 - £800 per tonne (2026), depending on volumes and transportation costs. Landfill Alternatives can help arrange recycling and collections.
As the small model in the LFA EPS compactor range (small, medium, large and extra large), the EPSC 1 is suited to sites producing smaller to moderate volumes of EPS packaging waste, where a simple, mobile and manually controlled EPS waste compactor is required.
