LFA EPSC 4 - Extra Large Polystyrene Compactor

The LFA EPSC 4 is an extra-large polystyrene compactor (EPS compactor) designed for sites producing very high volumes of expanded polystyrene packaging waste. It reduces loose EPS into dense, stackable blocks with a compaction ratio of up to 50:1, making it suitable for large commercial and industrial operations where storage space, handling and collection costs are a key concern.

Compacted EPS is formed into solid blocks with a 370 x 370 mm cross-section, with block length typically cut manually to suit pallet storage and transport. This allows finished blocks to be stacked securely on pallets, simplifying on-site storage and collection by specialist EPS recyclers.

Material is fed through a large 600 x 900 mm feed opening, allowing bulky moulded packaging and large EPS sections to be processed without pre-cutting. The machine is fitted with a pre-shredder positioned ahead of the auger, which breaks down larger items before they enter the screw compaction chamber. This helps prevent bridging, improves consistency and supports higher throughput when handling awkward or oversized EPS.

The LFA EPSC 4 is capable of processing approximately 120 to 150 kg of EPS per hour, equivalent to around 10 to 20 m³ of loose polystyrene per hour, depending on material density and feeding method.

Back pressure for the screw compaction auger is created using an automatic hydraulic channel clamp at the end of the compaction channel. The clamp adjusts itself during operation to suit the material being processed, removing the need for manual pressure setting. A cooling jacket surrounds the compaction chamber to manage heat during continuous operation and reduce the risk of EPS softening or melting, which can otherwise lead to blockages. When no material is being fed, the machine stops automatically rather than running empty.

The LFA EPSC 4 is used on UK sites handling very high volumes of EPS, including national distribution centres, large manufacturing plants, appliance distribution hubs, fisheries, food supply chains and packaging-intensive operations where polystyrene waste is generated continuously.

Compacting EPS at source turns bulky waste into a recyclable commodity. Densified EPS blocks currently achieve values in the region of £500 - £800 per tonne, depending on stored volume and transport distance, allowing many sites to generate income rather than pay for disposal. Landfill Alternatives can assist with recycler introductions and collection planning.

The LFA EPSC 4 is suited to sites that require maximum throughput, automated pressure control and pre-shredding capability for handling large volumes of bulky EPS waste.
